H-10 Sleepy Bobcat

The Bobcat occurs over all of Texas.  Bobcats occupy a variety of habitats and have adapted to many environments.

In much of Texas the bobcat remains the largest predator, hanging on where the bear, wolf and cougar have long been eliminated.

Bobcats are trapped for their furs in Texas, and a few Texas counties still offer a bounty on bobcats.

Bobcats are not afraid of dogs as are cougars, but will head for the nearest tree when out numbered.  Few dogs, even though they may outweigh the bobcat several times, are a match for the feisty cat.  In a one-on-one battle, the bobcat always wins.

Like the cougar, each bobcat establishes a home range that largely defines the cat's travels during its lifetime.  Typical bobcat cover is in woods, canebrakes, brush, ravines, creek bottoms or other overgrown areas.  Many live very near a farm or town without anyone ever knowing they are there.

Those who do see a bobcat in the wild should consider themselves fortunate.
